A shooting outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur services left a police officer seriously wounded and a 29-year-old gunman with life-threatening injuries. The congregation itself was not physically harmed, but the incident occurred while roughly two dozen people were inside observing Judaism's holiest day.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit said preliminary information indicates that at about 7 p.m. on September 20, a Belleville Police Service officer was near the synagogue at Victoria and Bleecker avenues when there was an exchange of gunfire involving a man armed with a shotgun. Both the man and one officer suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital. The officer was described as critical but stable.
Associated Press reporting identified the officer as Constable Jeff Smith and said the gunman was Sean Ward, 29. AP reported that as many as 30 shots were fired. Worshippers sheltered inside the synagogue and the remaining Yom Kippur services were cancelled.
The central unresolved question is motive. Authorities had not publicly confirmed that the synagogue, its worshippers or Jews as a group were the intended target in the material reviewed for this record. The president of the congregation, Norman Weddum, told Canadian media that he regards an armed man's approach to a synagogue where Jews were praying as a hate crime. That is an attributed assessment by the congregation's president, not yet a formal police determination.
