Official narrative engineering

Three worked cases of claims engineered to pass as war reporting — and the corrections that unmade them.

Why this file exists

This branch follows engineered claims into the official record — the material built to be mistaken for war reporting, picked up and moved at the speed of news, and what it took for the record to catch up. Each campaign below was corrected in public by a named verification desk, and the correction is cited on the file.

The other side of the investigation — the influence networks themselves, mapped account by account — is a separate branch: the social-media front.

The cases at a glance

The three files compared: what each claim was graded, what evidence basis the grade rests on, and when the record caught up. Each case opens its full file below.

Case files

Each documented campaign gets a file with the same structure: the claim as it spread, its point of origin, the amplification pattern, and the evidence that unmade it. The case files exist so that the next wave can be recognized from the last one — the machine changes its content far more often than it changes its method.

Exhibit AFalse

Video-game footage passed off as combat video

As it spread

Clips shared widely on TikTok and X in the days after October 7, 2023 — one flagged post alone drew more than 3 million views — were captioned as real footage of the fighting between Israel and Hamas.

What the record shows

Bohemia Interactive issued its own statement confirming that footage from its game was being falsely presented as real conflict footage. BBC Verify’s Shayan Sardarizadeh independently identified and flagged specific Arma 3 clips being circulated as combat video.
  1. Origin

The footage was not war video. It was gameplay recorded from Arma 3, a military simulation game released by Bohemia Interactive in 2013 — a decade before the war it was being used to illustrate.

  2. Amplification

Clips spread rapidly across TikTok and X in the immediate aftermath of October 7, riding the same surge of search traffic that made any dramatic-looking military footage likely to be reshared uncredited.

Tells exhibited
  • Imagery that reverse-image and reverse-video search traces to a different time and place.
  • Synchronized timing — the claim erupting everywhere at once in the days right after October 7.
Exhibit BOut of context

A Haifa evacuation video recaptioned as an infiltration

As it spread

A video showing people rushing out of their homes in Haifa was shared with a caption claiming it showed Hezbollah militants who had infiltrated northern Israel.

What the record shows

BBC Verify’s senior verification journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh identified and corrected the claim, describing the clip as genuine evacuation footage misattributed to an infiltration that the video does not show.
  1. Origin

The footage itself was genuine — recorded in Haifa during the war’s first days. What it showed was residents responding to a siren and moving toward shelter, not an infiltration.

  2. Amplification

The false caption spread on X in the same window as a wider wave of siren and evacuation footage from northern Israel being reframed as evidence of ground incursions.

Tells exhibited
  • Imagery that reverse-image search traces to a different time and place than the caption claims.

Exhibit CFalse

A 2022 short film mislabeled as staged Hamas propaganda

As it spread

Instagram posts in October 2023 claimed a video showed Hamas militants "dressing up as Jewish soldiers" to fabricate propaganda footage from the war.

What the record shows

PolitiFact traced the clip to Eshtaiwe’s 2022 film, with the director confirming the footage’s origin, and rated the propaganda claim False. A similar claim about the same source footage had already been fact-checked by Reuters in 2022, before the war began.
  1. Origin

The clip was behind-the-scenes footage from "Empty Place," a short film directed by Awni Eshtaiwe and released on YouTube in April 2022 — eighteen months before the war it was later attributed to. The film dramatizes the true story of Ahmad Manasra, a Palestinian boy convicted in 2015 of attempted stabbing; the clip shows cast and crew preparing a scene.

  2. Amplification

The claim circulated on Instagram alongside a broader wave of October 2023 posts recycling pre-war footage as fabricated "crisis actor" or staged-propaganda evidence.

Tells exhibited
  • Imagery that reverse-image search traces to a different time and place — in this case eighteen months before the war it was attributed to.

Order of correction

The three files above, in the order each was corrected. The date is the publication date of the fact-check cited on that file — the record catching up, not the claim spreading. Three corrections landing inside one week is what a heavy week of fact-checking looks like; on its own it is not evidence that the three campaigns were run together, and this page does not claim it is.
